Increase the salaries of teachers?

The idea was launched yesterday while slowly starting to sink various elements of the platform of "movement" intends to launch Francois Legault: should we raise the salaries of teachers? Former Minister of Education intends to attract better candidates and motivate teachers already in post.

Francis Cardinal, Press , seems to favor the initiative. It relies on the latest PISA report: "Education systems most successful tend to give priority to teacher salaries and not to reduce class sizes. "

For my part, I have serious reservations about this measure. This is not a few thousand dollars more that will attract better teachers and motivate existing ones. The grievances of teachers elsewhere. Here are some tips to Legault.

- Just a few minutes to chat to see how they are fed up with changes "teaching" over the last twelve years and the disconnected nature of what is required by the MELS from the reality on the ground. Legault would be well friends if offered early retirement to all those teachers who go from government failure to another with each reform. In addition, senior officials accountable should the changes they propose. These are also the only individuals of the entire education system in Quebec seem to have no accountability.
- Teachers want more professional autonomy than money. Many people fleeing the world of education because the teachers are totally patronized. Never accept a true professional with much contempt from his bosses.
- Another point that drew praise from some teachers is that real look at how money is spent on education. Mr. Legault is already challenging the school board, either. But why stop halfway? It should initiate a meaningful analysis in education budgets. With the mergers of school boards that have become regional entities, what are the branches of the MELS, for example? The Department of Education, is there no need to engage in meaningful analysis of the role of the many organizations that are attached? Unless I'm mistaken, there are more staff per student in Quebec than in many other countries.

But there is little chance that the latter measure is put forward by anyone. The Ministry of Education is composed of employees whose unions vigorously defend positions. These are the same unions that defend the teachers ... whose working conditions have deteriorated over the years. The same unions that protect some members over others eventually.

Certainly, Mr. Legault will have solid proposals in education. For the record, it will be recalled that it had already stated, in full collective bargaining, the teachers were "Bookworms magazines "and supported the reform without any reservations. If you can not erase the past, we can nevertheless understand the present and future.
